The garden level of a Mid-Century Modern townhouse on East 51st Street in Manhattan was converted from office space to a one bedroom apartment. A sense of openness and connection to the garden were maintained while necessary private enclosures were provided for the new bedroom, bath, and closet. Full height doors, re-used walnut panels, and mirrored surfaces were designed to create the impression of open space and higher ceilings. Detailing for the new custom kitchen cabinets was inspired by original woodwork on the upper levels of the house. Photos by Wendell Webber.
